Yet another successful meeting organised by Dr Oakden, full of fantastic speakers and networking events for the ANWICU Membership. We returned to the Langdale Estate near Ambleside in the wonderful Lake District where the sun was shining with what felt like a beautiful summer's day in late September.
The morning started off with a fantastic series of talk from Prof Tony Redmond, OBE, on his extensive knowledge and work with Emergency Humanitarian Assistance. Prof Redmond also returned for an interesting evening address. For more information on Prof Redmond's charity UK-Med, please click here. Networking activities ranged from walks, hikes, runs, bike rides, spa visits and sampling of the Lakes' finest pubs, all before our Annual General Meeting where we thanked Dr Jeremy Wood for his 10 years as treasurer of ANWICU, and his immense support which significantly contributed to the growth of the organisation. Budget box was ceremoniously handed over to Dr Tant, who will no doubt carry on Dr Wood's good work. We'd like to thank all of our speakers; Dr Colin Wasson, Shaun Morgan and pharmacy team, Sharon Whiting, Peter Ledson, Dr Liz Thomas for sharing their inspiring work and experiences with us. Gloves were off in the t̶r̶a̶i̶n̶e̶e̶s̶ resident's debate where Dr McGregor and Dr Woffinden discussed admissions of the frail rib fracture patient to the Intensive Care Unit. An involved audience contributed with questions and opinions, before the voting showed that the 'nays' had it. Finally, we finished the meeting with the annual Robbie McKendrick Prize Session. Four fantastic presentations from Intensivists in training across the region, presented on topics ranging from case reports to guidelines. A huge congratulations to Dr Sam Calmonson who took home the prize for his presentation on 'An 'Ologist for Hypoxia' and will benefit from a Brimstone upgrade (if you know, you know) at the 2025 Lakes meeting. Get your study leave booked for the 18-19th September 2025 when we will return to the Lakes for more team building, educational talks and networking!
